Founded in 2006 by Louisville native Matt Jamie, Bourbon Barrel Foods began when Matt set out to produce his first batch of soy sauce in his home bar. Now known as Bluegrass Soy Sauce, America’s only microbrewed soy sauce, the process and ingredients Matt uses to create this sauce is truly what makes it unique. Not only is it made with Kentucky grown non-GMO soybeans and limestone filtered Kentucky water, it’s also aged for a year in repurposed bourbon barrels.
And Bluegrass Soy Sauce is only the beginning of the story. Its product line now includes smoked spices, artisan sugars, gourmet sauces and marinades, grill wood, sorghum, vanilla extract and more… and all incorporate innovative uses of bourbon barrels in the process.
Aside from its assortments of spices and sauces, Bourbon Barrel Foods also hosts a series of classes that teach guests how to prepare some of their favorite recipes. Appropriately named “Eat Your Bourbon,” these classes are held about once a month at various locations around Louisville. Coming up in October, classes include “Eat Your Bourbon for Breakfast,” which will teach guests how to make some of Matt’s favorite brunch recipes; and “Drink Your Bourbon,” a mixology class with the opportunity to sample craft cocktails from some of Louisville’s most creative bartenders.
