Two guys with a strong love for coffee joined forces in 1992 in an attempt to share that passion with the local community. Armed only with an espresso cart and coffee beans they roasted in three pound batches inside of a coffee roaster the size of a shoe box, Mike Mays and Gary Heine, an ex-attorney and an ex-copywriter set up shop in an East Louisville grocery store. By 1994, that passion for a good brew landed them their first neighborhood shop on Bardstown Road and six additional locations quickly followed.
Heine Brothers has always been a company that stands firm on sustainability, recycling and justice. Since its inception, they have been an organic, fair trade coffee house that promotes fair wages for the coffee bean growers in Latin America, Africa and Asia. In 2000, Cooperative Coffees, a purchasing cooperative for organic fair trade growers, was founded by Mays and Heine. The company has also partnered with advocacy organizations that support important social issues as well as many local artistic, cultural, and social organizations.
In keeping with that desire to support local talent, Heine Brothers enlisted the expertise of local label printer Louisville Label when it came time to print their highly recognizable packaged coffee label. After several years of a budding friendship and many talks of negotiation, in 2001 Louisville Label got the nod to begin printing Heine Brothers Flavor Labels, Fair Trade labels, Certified Organic labels and Coffee Bag labels.
Louisville Label President Anne Diemer also enjoys working with local businesses because of the ability to build closer relationships and the opportunity to offer more assistance, as opposed to a larger corporation which might just know what they want and order it without much interaction.
